Choosing the Right Beer Glass

Choosing the Right Beer Glass

As nights get longer and air cooler, it’s time to break out the fleece and the fire pit. Nothing pairs with this autumn ritual quite like the perfect glass of beer. We’re lucky in the Philadelphia area to have so many fantastic options for locally crafted beers to choose from. Whether you’re going for Dogfish Head’s seasonal Punkin Ale, or Victory’s hoppy 21st Anniversary IPA you’ll need to know what glass pairs perfectly with which brew. Below is a handy guide to some of the most popular glass shapes and what to pour in them.

American Pint Glass
Usually made from a thicker glass, these hefty guys are built to last – and to maintain the perfect temperature. The shape is simple and clean, which allows for just the right amount of aroma. This glass is a go-to for almost any beer.

Pilsner Glass
Though this glass is often used for many types of light beers, it is intended for its namesake, the pilsner. They are tall, slender and tapered to to best showcase the color, effervescence and clarity of the pilsner beer, as well as maintain a nice head.

Tulip Glass
The distinct shape of a tulip beer glass (sometimes called a ‘taster’) not only helps trap the aroma, but also helps keep a large head on your beer. This glass (named for its curved tulip shaped lip) is the perfect choice for serving hoppy beer styles such as India Pale Ales (IPAs) and other aromatic beers.

Snifter Glass
When you hear snifter, your first thought is probably brandy or cognac. But this style of glass, with its wide bottom and tapered lip is also perfectly suited for strong beers with strong flavors like Belgian ales, and double or imperial IPAs.

One of my favorite lines for all things glass and crystal is Orrefors, they’ve been around since the 1700s making gorgeous glass the old fashioned way. At Tailored Home we have these fantastic sets of lager and pilsner glasses by Orrefors. At just $50 for a set of four, they’re a steal. And if you’re still not sure which beer glass you need, try their ‘collection,’ a set that includes one pilsner, one lager, and one ‘taster’ glass. It’s perfect for trying out all the different seasonal brews, or as a gift for the beer lover on your shopping list.

Cheers to Fall!
