September is the New January

For me this is such a topsy-turvy time of year.  I hate the close of the hazy days of summer.  I mourn the putting away of sandals and long family dinners on our porch, but what I do love is the sense of starting anew.  September is much more of a new year for me than January. 

Maybe it’s because I was always one of those kids who loved going back to school. New classes, new school supplies and of course, new clothes.   My mom would take my sister and me for a power shop at Lord & Taylor followed by lunch at The Bird Cage, their in-house luncheon spot.  Later, we would model our new fall fashions for my dad and grandmother, who lived with us.  Every couple of years, we’d get a new book bag from LL Bean.  Mine always had blue handles—like my bedding, my pajamas and even my toothbrush. What I remember most though was not the azure forced march, but that it was always a time to start afresh. Continue reading September is the New January

Behind the Scenes: A Visit to Matouk

This week my daughter Rosemary and I toured the Matouk Factory and headquarters in Fall River, Massachusetts. I have always loved this line, first as a consumer and now as a store owner.  I can completely trust the quality and attention to detail they have been providing since 1929.  I first visited the factory in the late 80s when it was still in New Bedford.  Back then you would enter by going up rickety stairs in an old factory on New Bedford’s Inner Harbor.  It was like going back in time to the 1920s when the textile industry had eclipsed whaling in southeastern Massachusetts.  Continue reading Behind the Scenes: A Visit to Matouk

Pasta bowls are a thing now.  Flag bearers of a new foodie revolution, they’ve turned the traditional table upside down.  Every bride we register wants pasta bowls. And it’s not just at Tailored Home – every major retailer across the globe has reported a significant rise in sales of pasta bowls.  They’ve begun to surpass even dinner plates in overall demand, with new designs in pasta bowls, coupes (that’s a sort of plate-bowl hybrid), and ‘bistro bowls’ cropping up everywhere you look.

How We Live Now

In design, we continue to see a trend toward simplicity. 

Bedrooms are completely cleared of daily living.  Bureaus are only in the rooms when absolutely necessary.  Chaises are having a comeback.  Bedrooms are temples of unwinding and unplugging.  Kitchens are sleek, closed-cabinet rooms belying nary a clue about who uses them. Gone are the days of the Julia Childs all tools-at-the-ready kitchen.  Counters are empty ready for a meal to be staged and just as quickly put away.
